King became famous in 1991 when he was the victim of police brutality at the hands of the LAPD. The officers involved in the incident were acquitted the following year and the announcement of the verdict led to the Los Angeles riots.

Junior Seau's death presumed suicide - RIP 55

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Former Chargers linebacker Junior Seau was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot in his home Wednesday, authorities said.

Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy said police received an emergency call at about 9:35 a.m. from a woman who identified herself as Seau's girlfriend. She told them that she had found Seau unconscious with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police and fire personnel were sent to Seau's beach-front residence in the 600 block of The Strand, McCoy said. They found Seau in one of the home's bedrooms, and paramedics unsuccessfully attempted to revive him, he said.

"This case at this point is being investigated as a suicide,'' the chief said outside the home. ``A handgun was found near the body.''

Technicians from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office arrived at the home shortly after noon. Police cordoned off Seau's home. Helicopter video showed dozens of police officers outside the home. Other officers were going in and out of the home.

Medical Examiner's technicians removed Seau's body from the home at about 1:30 p.m.

Investigators did not find a suicide note, Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Mata said. They have not found any sign of foul play, but the investigation is still active, Mata said.

Police withheld the name of Seau's girlfriend and would not comment on the details of her relationship with the NFL great.

Seau's mother, Luisa Seau, tearfully implored the crowd gathered in front of his seaside house to "show your love to my son.''

"I prayed to God, `Take me, leave my son,' but it's too late, too late,'' she said in a grief-choked voice.

Seau, who had been a standout athlete at the University of Southern California, played 20 seasons in the National Football League, most for the Chargers, but also for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots.

Considered one of the best linebackers in the game, he was elected to 12 consecutive Pro Bowls as a member of San Diego's NFL franchise.

The Chargers issued a brief statement at midday, saying the entire organization was "in complete shock and disbelief'' over Seau's death. "Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now," the statement said. "We ask everyone to stop what they're doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family."

Team President Dean Spanos later described himself as "shocked and devastated'' and called the loss of Seau "one of the worst things I could ever imagine.''

"Junior was my friend,'' Spanos said. "We all lost a friend today. Junior was an icon in our community. He transcended the game. He wasn't just a football player; he was so much more. He was loved by everyone in our family, our organization and throughout the NFL. ... It's heartbreaking.''

Head coach Norv Turner said he had "no words to describe the passing of Junior Seau.''

"It is a sad, sad day for not only me, but for the whole sports community,'' Turner said. "I worked with Junior here and later in Miami. I can tell you no one had more character and true leadership ability than Junior. He brought passion to the game of football that was unmatched. His commitment to charitable causes in the community was inspiring. It was an honor to know him.''

In 1992, Seau created the Junior Seau Foundation, an organization formed "to educate and empower young people through the support of child-abuse prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, recreational opportunities, anti- juvenile delinquency efforts and complimentary educational programs.''

In 1996, he established what would become a popular Mission Valley sports bar-restaurant bearing his last name.

Signs of personal trouble in the local sports icon's life surfaced a year and a half ago.

On Oct. 18, 2010, Seau was arrested after his 25-year-old live-in girlfriend reported that he had assaulted her during an argument. Later that morning, five hours after bailing out of jail, he drove his 2004 Cadillac Escalade over a rocky 30-foot coastal cliff and onto Carlsbad State Beach, suffering minor injuries.

Seau told police he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The San Diego County District Attorney's Office declined to file charges against the football star over the alleged domestic abuse.

USC head football coach Lane Kiffin said Seau recently attended the Trojans' spring game at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

"This is a very sad day,'' Kiffin said. "The USC football program and the entire Trojan Family extends our condolences to Junior's family. He was one of the greatest Trojans of all time.''

USC athletic director Pat Haden added, "Junior Seau was one of the greatest legends in USC football history. He will always be remembered by USC as the original No. 55.''

Seau is survived by a daughter and two sons.

Teens Getting Drunk Off Hand Sanitizer

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Doctors are warning parents about a dangerous new trend after six teenagers drank hand sanitizer and ended up in Southern California emergency rooms with alcohol poisoning.

Dr. Billy Mallon works in the emergency room at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.

He said he's seen too many young people come through the hospital's doors because they tried to get drunk by guzzling hand sanitizer.

Sign up for FOX5 Breaking News alerts

It doesn't sound appealing, but you have to remember that kids don't have access to alcohol so they're very creative," Mallon told KTLA.

The trend may seem harmless or even laughable, but doctors say it's harmful and dangerous.

Bottles of hand sanitizers are inexpensive and accessible and teens can find instructions on distillation online.

Liquid hand sanitizer is 62% ethyl alcohol and makes a 120-proof liquid.

"It's essentially a shot of hard liquor," said Cyrus Rangan, director of the toxicology bureau for the L.A. County Public Health Department and a medical toxicology consultant for Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

"All it takes is just a few swallows and you have a drunk teenager."

"It is kind of scary that they go to that extent to get a shot of essentially hard liquor," Rangan said.

Although there have been only a few cases, Rangan said the practice could easily become a larger problem.

At least six teens from the San Fernando Valley have ended up in local emergency rooms in recent weeks.

In addition to the teens who intentionally drank the sanitizer, younger children also have accidentally ingested it in the past.

A few drinks can cause a person's speech to slur and stomach to burn, and make them so drunk that they have to be monitored in the emergency room.

Doctors said this is the latest over-the-counter product teens have adapted for a quick high.

Teens have done the same with mouthwash, cough syrup and even vanilla extract.

"Over the years, they have ingested all sorts of things," said Helen Arbogast, injury prevention coordinator in the trauma program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

"Cough syrup had reached a very sexy point where young people were using it.... We want to be sure this doesn't take on the same trend."

The recent cases involving hand sanitizers have surprised doctors. There were no such cases last year.

They have also raised concerns about the lack of awareness among parents of the risks linked to the popular hygiene product.

If parents buy hand sanitizer, they should purchase the foam version rather than the gel type because it is harder to extract the alcohol and teens may be less likely to drink it.

Parents also shouldn't leave hand sanitizer around the house, and should monitor it like any other liquor or medication.

Girl swallowed by pavement in China (VIDEO)

A cab driver comes to a young girl's rescue after she falls through a pavement into a sink hole in northern China.

A surveillance camera catches the moment an unsuspecting girl falls through a pavement while walking down a street in northern China.

The pavement caved in under the teenager's weight as soon as she stepped onto a section of the walkway.

What followed was a dramatic rescue attempt by a passing taxi driver. His heroic actions were also filmed by close circuit television and on mobile phones.

The passing cab driver stopped immediately at the scene and climbed into the six-metre deep pit to help the girl.

"I called out to her but she didn't respond. After I shook her a little, she came to," said Wang Wei, a taxi driver in the northern city of Xi'an.

Wang climbed down to the bottom of the pit clinging to a cable under the pavement.

"The dirt kept showering down on us and the kid couldn't stop crying," he added.

Underground water had eroded the ground under the road and caused a cavity under the pavement.

The ground in the pit continued to shift while the cab driver and the girl were still in it, which made it impossible for them to climb out until firefighters extended a ladder in to help them.

"The ladder kept moving about, it's a little flimsy and the girl kept screaming out of fear. So I told her to go first and I'll be right behind her. Finally we managed to get out," Wang said.

Amateur footage showed the pair emerging from the hole and being pulled to safety with the help of fire fighters and passers-by.

Trayvon Martin: Police Chief in Trayvon Martin Case to Resign

SANFORD, Fla. -- Sanford, Florida, Police Chief Bill Lee is expected to resign Monday, 57 days after his department declined to arrest neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, according to a city official familiar with the matter.

Lee announced that he was temporarily stepping aside on March 22, a day after Sanford's city commission expressed a lack of confidence in his handling of the incident.

At the time, Sanford police were under intense pressure to arrest Zimmerman, 28, for shooting the unarmed teen-ager. Zimmerman was later charged with second-degree murder after a special prosecutor investigated the case.

Zimmerman left the John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Sanford, Florida, after making bail around midnight Sunday, wearing a brown jacket and blue jeans and carrying a brown paper bag in his arms. He got into the back of a white BMW and did not speak to reporters.

It was not immediately known where he was headed. Family members and Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, have stressed the need for secrecy regarding Zimmerman's destination. Both he and his family have received threats, they said.

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office said Zimmerman had been fitted with a GPS monitoring device allowing authorities to track his location.

He is next scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment -- a formal reading of charges against him -- on May 8, according to documents released by the court on Monday. His arraignment had previously been scheduled for May 29.

Zimmerman's release came as something of a surprise. Over the weekend, his lawyer had said Zimmerman might remain behind bars until the middle of this week as his team worked to secure funds to meet the $150,000 bond set Friday.

With the 10% cash payment customarily made to secure bond, Zimmerman's family needed $15,000 for him to make bail.

Prosecutors had asked that Zimmerman's bond be set at no less than $1 million, citing a 2005 scrape with a police officer and a domestic violence injunction against Zimmerman.

Martin's family wasn't pleased by news of Zimmerman's release, said one of their attorneys, Daryl Parks.

"It's tough for them to see their son's killer walk free again," he said.

Martin, 17, was shot after Zimmerman called authorities to report a suspicious person walking around his Sanford neighborhood.

Zimmerman claims the unarmed teen attacked him. Martin's supporters say Zimmerman targeted Martin because he was black.

The case has has riveted the nation and sparked intense discussions about race and gun control.

For his part, Zimmerman, 28, remains "very worried" about his situation, O'Mara said Saturday, before his client's release.

During his bond hearing Friday, Zimmerman apologized to Martin's family.

"I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son," he said in an unusual appeal directly to Martin's family before he testified in the Seminole County Courthouse in Sanford. "I thought he was a little bit younger than I was, and I did not know if he was armed or not."

O'Mara said after the hearing that his client was responding to an interview in which Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, said she wanted to hear from the man who shot her son.

"He didn't want to defend himself, he didn't want to discuss the facts of the case. He heard the request of the family, and he wanted to respond to it," O'Mara said, adding that an attempt to apologize to the family in private was rebuffed.

Lawyers for Martin's family, however, called the apology a self-serving act by a man facing a life sentence in prison if convicted.

"This was the most disingenuous, insulting thing I've ever seen," said Martin family attorney Natalie Jackson.

Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda had argued for a higher bond total. Prior run-ins with a police officer and a woman who named him in a domestic violence injunction show that Zimmerman is violent and a threat to the community, de la Rionda said.

Lester, however, described the incidents as "run of the mill" and "somewhat mild" in approving O'Mara's request for bond.

Although details of the shooting remain murky, what is known is that Martin ventured out on February 26 from the home of his father's fiancée in Sanford and went to a nearby convenience store, where he bought a bag of Skittles and an Arizona Iced Tea.

On his way back, he had a confrontation with Zimmerman, who shot him.

Zimmerman had called 911 to complain about a suspicious person in the neighborhood.

In the call, Zimmerman said he was following Martin after the teen started to run, prompting the dispatcher to tell him, "We don't need you to do that."

Zimmerman told authorities that he first briefly lost track of Martin, then the teenager approached him and the two exchanged words. Zimmerman said he reached for his cell phone, then Martin punched him in the nose. Zimmerman said Martin pinned him down and began slamming his head onto the sidewalk, leading to the shooting.

A police report indicated Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose and the back of his head.

Zimmerman's father testified Friday that when he saw his son the day after Martin's shooting, he was wearing a protective cover over his nose, his face was swollen, and he had two vertical gashes on his head. He also reportedly suffered a broken nose.

Martin's family and the special prosecutor appointed to investigate the case have rejected Zimmerman's self-defense claim, saying they believe Zimmerman disobeyed a police dispatcher who advised him to stop following Martin, racially profiled him and unjustly killed him.

Police have said Zimmerman was not immediately charged because there was no evidence to disprove his account that he had acted in self-defense.

O'Mara said Saturday that he expects the prosecution was holding back some evidence that is key to its case during Friday's court hearing.

"I'm sure the state has a lot more information," the lawyer said, describing what was presented Friday as "snippets of the evidence." "I'm just looking forward to getting it."

Tupac Returns as Hologram at Coachella 2012 (VIDEO)

INDIO, Calif. -- Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg put on an impressive show at Coachella Sunday, and it included a surprise guest: deceased rapper Tupac Shakur.

The late rapper made his return to the stage from beyond the grave as a hologram during Dre and Snoop's set at the music festival held in Indio, California.

Thanks to the hologram technology, a shirtless Tupac seemed to take the stage, bearing greetings to Dre and Snoop before addressing the audience with, "What the f*** is up Coachella?"

Hologram Pac gave a surprisingly realistic and lively performance of "Hail Mary," followed by "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" with Snoop. The rapper died in September, 1996 after being shot multiple times by an assailant.

And that wasn't all: Dre and Snoop were also joined by (in the flesh, not holograms) Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa and Kendrick Lamar, MTV reports. It was previously rumored that Nate Dogg was going to appear at Coachella as a hologram, so we're hoping to see him as well as Pac on stage when Dre and Snoop repeat their Coachella closing set this Sunday, April 22.

Lamar Odom -- Dallas Mavericks SCRAMBLING to Dump Jerseys

Lamar Odom's Dallas Mavericks jersey is barely worth the fabric it's printed on -- at least according to the team's flagship merch store, which is dumping all Odom gear ... for dirt cheap.

Distributors for the Dallas Mavericks Ultimate Fan Shop tell TMZ, the moment Lamar's exit was announced they busted out clearance signs ... and slashed prices in an effort to unload every last remnant of #7(ironic) merchandise.

As you can see by our photo-enhancing skills -- the jerseys originally sold for $110 dollars a pop, but then dropped to $89.99. Now, the jerseys are going for a paltry $44.99. All other Odom merchandise was similarly marked down.

But it's not exactly helping sales -- we're told the store has only hocked TWO of the jerseys collector's items since cutting prices.

Newt Gingrich Utah Primary Check Bounces

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich may not appear on the ballot for the June 26 Utah primary, after a $500 check - the required filing fee - bounced, an official said.

State election director Mark Thomas told ABC News that a $500 check given by the Gingrich campaign to secure his place on the Utah ballot bounced on March 27.

"Our office immediately attempted to contact the campaign and the designated agent but no phone calls were returned," Thomas said. "We also asked the state Republican Party to assist us, but they also could not get into communication with them, although I do not know how they attempted to contact them."

One source close to the campaign told ABC News that the Gingrich campaign recently changed finance and accounting staff. The designated agent who filed the paperwork for the campaign was Wallace Woodruff "Woody" Hales, though Hales still works for the Gingrich campaign.

If the fee is not paid by April 20, Gingrich will be disqualified from the ballot.

"Our office certifies the candidates to the county clerks on April 24," Thomas said.

The check bounce comes as no surprise as Gingrich confirmed a debt of almost $4.5 million to ABC News on Tuesday. The last Federal Election Commission report from February showed a debt of less than $2 million.

Gingrich told ABC News today that the debt increase was because the campaign got "very excited in Florida" after his South Carolina win.

"Romney spent $20 million in Florida in three weeks and I think some of our guys decided to try to match him and we didn't have Wall Street," Gingrich said. "I am going to spend some time paying it off. It is something I have done several times in my career."

Gingrich said his campaign did "exactly what a conservative should do" who is in debt.

"We cut our expenses, we cut our staff, we are now in the process of paying it off but I think what happened is, they got really involved in the fight in Florida and didn't stop and just say to themselves, 'Wait a second.' I can beat Mitt Romney in ideas, I can't possibly compete with him in money," Gingrich said.

On the day Rick Santorum suspended his campaign, Gingrich sent an email to supporters saying he was "the last conservative standing." The campaign emailed to voters that the goal was to achieve 12,000 donations by midnight.

TSA Meets T&A -- Woman Strips Naked at Denver Airport

The TSA had their hands full at Denver International Airport this morning ... when a woman stripped down naked in the middle of the terminal ... and TMZ has a photo of the bizarre incident.

Sources at the scene tell us ... the woman had been smoking a cigarette in a non-smoking area inside Concourse B around 8:45 AM ... with her clothes on ... when airport staffers asked her to put out her butt.

That's when the woman inexplicably took off all of her clothes ... and nonchalantly asked the airport staffer if she could reprint her boarding pass.

Airport security responded to the scene ... but according to FOX31, the woman was not arrested -- instead she was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
